Skills and abilties are very different in DAoC, but also very much the same. To be able to use something, you must have the ability or skill to use it. For example, only those classes with the Hammers Skill or Hammers Ability can equip a Hammer. However, being able to use a Hammer does not necessarily mean you can train or become better at Hammers. Every time you level up, you gain skill points based on your level. These skill points allow you to train in skills. Someone with the Hammer Skill can spend his skill points training in Hammers, while someone with only Hammers Ability will never be able to train or become better at Hammers without magical influence.
